I'd like to change my membership

Please call us on 020 8332 3200 to upgrade your membership. You can change to a Family Friend membership, or you can upgrade your Individual membership to a Joint membership. Additional costs will apply.

Do you have a family membership?

Yes you can purchase an Individual Family Friend membership or Joint Family Friend membership which will allow you, one family guest and two children unlimited access to the Gardens for twelve months. If you wish to bring additional children you can pay £5 extra per additional child as part of your Family Friend membership, for the duration of your membership.

Who can use joint membership?

Our joint memberships are for any two adults from the same family living at the same address. Each Friend receives their own card. Joint Friends receive one copy of Kew magazine. Please remember that cards are for use by the named individual only and are not transferable.

I want to become a Family Friend member, do the children on the membership have to be my own?

No, you can use a Family Friend membership to visit with children who are not your own. For instance, child minders or grandparents who currently visit with children using their own membership are welcome to upgrade to a Family Friend category to continue visiting as before. All children have to be accompanied by an adult.

When signing up for Family Friend membership, will you take information about my children (for example, their names), and will they have their own membership cards?

Children (4 to 16 years old) will not receive their own membership cards – the cardholders are the named adult(s), who must always accompany any children visiting with their Family Friend membership. You will not be required to provide the children’s names but the number of children you wish to include on your membership (if more than two) will be noted. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew terms and conditions still apply: all children must be accompanied by an adult in the Gardens.

I would like to switch to a Family Friend membership before my membership renewal. How can I do this?

You can pay a top up fee of £7 or £9 (if you have more than 6 months left until renewal) or, £3.50 or £4.50 (if you have less than 6 months until renewal) to switch to a Family Friend membership of the same category for the duration of your existing membership. This will allow you to bring two children until your renewal date at which point the new category can be paid in full for the coming year. You can do this in the Gardens or by phone. You will receive a temporary membership card and your Family Friend membership card will be posted to you within three-weeks.

I only have six-months (or less) left on my current membership and I don’t want to pay the full £7/£9 top-up fee to upgrade to a Family Friend membership. What can I do?

It is understandable you do not wish to pay the full top up amount when you have less than six-months left on your current membership. That is why we are asking Friends who have six-months or less until their renewal date to top up by £3.50 or £4.50 to upgrade to a Family Friend membership. If you have one-month remaining on your membership, you can renew straight away.

When changing to Family Friend membership, how are the ‘top up’ prices calculated?

The prices are the exact difference between the standard and family options. To keep it fair we have decided to offer different top up fees depending on whether you are upgrading in the first or second six-months of your annual membership.

My child is going to have their fourth birthday before my membership expires. What is the most cost-effective way for me to transfer to Family Friend membership?

There are two prices for upgrading Family Friend membership. If your child’s birthday falls in the first six-months of your membership, it is best to do it straight away for £7 or £9. If however, their birthday falls in the last six-months of your membership, it is better to wait until that point and pay £3.50 or £4.50 at the Gardens. Your membership will then renew at the Family Friend category which you have changed to.

I’ve lost my membership card

Call us on 020 8332 3200 and we can arrange for a replacement card to be sent out to you so that you can continue to enjoy fast and easy access to the Gardens.

Why can I only bring another person from my family for free as my 'family guest'?

HMRC regulations mean that it is only the visits of family members of Friends that enjoy free entry to the Gardens.

How do you define 'family member'?

A family member is defined by HMRC as your spouse, civil partner, partner who you live with, sibling, lineal descendant or ancestor.

How do I bring in a family member as my free guest to the Gardens?

When visiting with a family member, just show your valid membership card at the entrance gate and you will gain free entry for yourself and one other person from your family.  Free entry is limited to one adult from your family per Friend on each visit.

How do I make a donation to Kew?

You can donate online here or phone us on 0208 332 3200 and donate by credit/debit card. If you would prefer to post a donation, please send it to: Kew Foundation, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, 47 Kew Green, Richmond, TW9 3AB. Please make cheques payable to “Kew Foundation” and remember to include your name and address. Find out about our areas of work.

Can I come into the Gardens without my membership card?

You’ll need to bring your valid membership card each time you wish to visit the Gardens. If you have misplaced your card, please call us to arrange a replacement card as soon as possible.
